Social & Ethical Responsibility
Goal Interpretation:
My interpretation of this goal is that as human beings we have the priveledge and duty to hold others and ourselves accountable for our actions. Because we exist, we have the responsibility to maintain order and to always strive to do whats right for the good of the entire group.
I did not walk into Senior Inquiry as a brand new senior thinking this way. An assignment that really helped me gain this different view was reading the story of Frankenstein. This, paired with the Dr. Todd Scientific Ethics unit gave me a broader understanding of what actions are okay and not okay. Best of all it showed me why particular actions were okay or not. An essential part of this is that people have different opinions. We discussed a lot of the gray areas that had legitimate arguments on each side and our task was to look at both sides and see which one was better. We studied philosophers like Kant and Mill that gave their views on ethics to help us with our decisions. I remember well the in-class discussions about certain subjects with ethics and frankenstein that brought out unexpected emotion that sometimes became heated.
A reading that we did called: Cat's Cradle pushed me even further to explore other social and ethical dilemmas that made me question the motives of certain characters and the decisions they made. What was applicable to me was the motives behind their decisions. What drove them to make those good/bad decisions and how do prevent/embrace that.
