Goal Interpretation:

This target, to me, means to have a sufficient knowledge of the material that is being studied in the class. Not only that, but as students we have to learn to be more independent in our learning and learn to utilize the best resources around us. We’re learning how to learn.

An assignment we had this year in senior inquiry that forced me to grow up in this area was in the first semester when we read Heart of Darkness. That book for me was a tough read and made me have to dig a little deeper to find meaning in the text. When it came time to write the Heart of Darkness Responses, I had a great idea of the story and the author’s messages behind his symbolism.

Part of being a more independent learner is you have to go out at find information and ideas yourself, whether it be your own ideas or resources from others. In a lot of our assignments this year, we had to find many sources (peer-reviewed or not) and connect them to assignments we wrote. An assignment I had a tough time with doing this with was the Modern Art Research. I could not figure out for a long time how to connect the somewhat relevant sources I found to the Art. I had thought that Art was subjective and that it was difficult to find a definite meaning behind the aesthetically pleasing exterior. It is tedious to find sources, but with patience I found some relevant and interesting sources that helped my argument regarding the art. The deeper thinking I had experienced because of having to connect multiple subjects helped me develop my knowledge and thinking capability. Because I worked on this many times this year it will help me in college.

One of the biggest assignments this year was our Spring Research Paper. My chosen subject was on whether or not collegiate athletes should get paid. I saw many points of view that gave valid arguments which helped my perspective in the paper grow. Not only that but because I had to connect all of these to the topic I found similarities and patterns that weren’t so easy to see before. Soon I developed my own opinion and then in consequence the argument strengthened. I had think about every option and attempt to find potential alternatives to the issue. With this i gained a broader understanding of my topic and developed a stronger knowledge.

Inquiry + Critical Thinking

"Students will learn various modes of inquiry through interdisciplinary curricula—problem-posing, investigating, conceptualizing—in order to become active, self-motivated, and empowered learners."
